The American Cancer Society recently shared a bleak figure – for the first time, new cases of cancer in the United States are expected to cross the 2-million mark. That’s equivalent to a record 5,500 cancer diagnoses each day.
While advancements in care have led to a steady decline in cancer deaths over the last 30 years, rising cases for many common cancers puts that progress at risk. More than 313,000 new breast cancer cases are projected for 2024.
As the brightest minds in healthcare attempt to reverse this trend, some recent wins were announced for cancer care. Congress is eyeing several pieces of legislation to address gaps in research and care, and the White House, as part of its Cancer Moonshot program, recently announced that more than a half dozen large private health insurers have agreed to cover the cost of navigators who guide cancer patients and their families through the overwhelming journey following a diagnosis.
How can the federal government, healthcare providers, patients, and other stakeholders work together to promote innovations for cancer prevention and treatments? How should we address inequities when it comes to screening, diagnostics, and cancer care? And how can we reverse the trend of rising cancer incidence in the United States?
Join The Hill as we host a cancer summit with administration officials, lawmakers, patient advocates, doctors, and scientists to weigh in on how to accelerate critical research and equity with the goal of putting an end to cancer.
